Build your foundation
Read one topic, explain the ideas without looking, use flashcards to check recall, then try the related practice questions. Return to missed concepts over several study sessions.
Use these as a workflow vocabulary. The current exam blueprints organize content differently; map the functions to your selected pathway rather than treating the 2014 table of contents as today’s blueprint.
Recall. Reveal. Revisit.
Try answering before you reveal. Mark a card known or keep it in review. These are self-ratings for learning, not a mastery assessment. Topic, TIP, and search filters shape the deck.
Read the case. Choose the next step.
Twelve fictional vignettes each contain four linked decisions. Practice identifying priorities, weighing incomplete information, choosing an intervention, and planning follow-up. Each answer includes reasoning for all four options.
These original educational cases are not official or recalled exam items. Each decision states its own assumptions; it is not a branching simulation or a full clinical protocol. Opening a case includes all four decisions even when only one part matches your topic filter.
Choose the best answer for each scenario. Feedback appears after each response. Changing the pathway, topic, or session length starts a fresh session.
Explore the SAMHSA TIP series
Go beyond memorization. Each guide, flashcard, and practice explanation points to relevant TIP publications. These are selected learning concepts, not a reproduction of the complete publications or a claim that every TIP is required reading for your exam. The attached commercial question banks and instructor manual are used as study guides for topic selection and style; their question text, answer keys, and files are not republished here.
Edition matters. This map covers 64 verified numbered titles (1–61 and 63–65), including historical and replaced publications. It groups volumes rather than counting translations, quick guides, and editions as separate TIPs. Live catalog completeness and every currently available format could not be verified. Older listings announced TIP 62, but a released volume was not verified for this map. Use current authority for laws, prescribing, and diagnostic details.
Each record links to a verified publication, advisory, or clearly labeled series listing and to its related study theme. The question bank draws on selected applicable concepts; not every historical TIP has dedicated questions.
Exam and current-practice references
The 2014 manual is useful for foundational topics. Verify current exam outlines, law, diagnostic guidance, and practice standards using primary sources. Links below were reviewed October 30, 2026.
Use person-centered substance use disorder terminology and current diagnostic criteria.
Distinguish current NC CADC/ADC and LCAS/AADC pathways.
Use updated AADC weights and current candidate guide policies.
Include medication treatment, multiple recovery pathways, and current Part 2 consent rules.
Practice scenarios are simplified learning examples. They do not replace the full candidate reference list, clinical judgment, supervision, or current laws and agency procedures.
Make a repeatable study rhythm
Confirm your credential pathway and applicable candidate guide.
Choose a topic and read the notes. Explain the ideas aloud in your own words.
Complete a short practice session. Read explanations for correct and missed answers.
Review missed questions and cards still to learn in later sessions. Read the linked TIP chapters to expand your understanding.
This expanded companion supplements the official exam reference list. It is not a full-length exam simulation. Scores are for learning and do not determine eligibility, CE credit, certification, or likelihood of passing.
Only practice results, missed question IDs, and flashcard self-ratings are stored in your browser. No account, client information, or clinical records are needed. Clearing browser data removes progress; devices do not sync.
Source and update note · reviewed October 30, 2026. Topic coverage and question style were informed by the uploaded LCDC preparation curriculum, AODA practice material, Addiction Counselor Exam Secrets, Uppers, Downers, All Arounders instructor manual, and Getting Ready to Test. These preparation materials date from 2004–2017; their terminology and policies may be historical. Current exam pathways and outlines were checked against IC&RC and the North Carolina Board. Expanded with a 64-title SAMHSA TIP series map and 20 learning topics. Historical titles are distinguished from revised editions and more recent publications. This companion contains original summaries, flashcards, and scenarios, not secure exam items or copied manual chapters. TIP publication dates are shown in the source library; verify current law, medical guidance, and exam references. It is independent of IC&RC, NAADAC, and Quizlet. No CE credit or exam endorsement is claimed.
